Dr. Haidy N Kamel is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Cuyahoga Community College, Eastern campus. Dr. Kamel earned her Bachelor degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Suez Canal University, Egypt in 1998. She joined the graduate program at the University of Mississippi where she earned her doctorate degree in Pharmacognosy (Chemicals in Natural Sources) in 2004. Dr. Kamel received a fellowship from the NIUST (National Institute of Underwater Science and Technology) in 2006 to continue her research in drug discovery from natural sources. She published 12 research articles in peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Natural Products, Chemical and Pharmaceutical Bulletin, and Tetrahedron. Dr. Kamel joined Tri-C in 2011, teaching Chemistry courses including Inorganic, Organic, and Biochemistry introductory courses. She also teaches an online class on herbal and dietary supplements.
Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) encompasses a wide range of practices, with natural products and dietary interventions playing a pivotal role. This presentation explores the use of dietary supplements, and functional foods in promoting health and preventing disease. Attendees will gain insights into evidence-based applications of popular supplements such as omega-3 fatty acids, and turmeric, along with the health benefits of functional foods like garlic, and green tea. The discussion will address safety, regulatory considerations, and the importance of integrating these practices with conventional care.

On January 15th, PE Keith Viers took turn at the podium and demonstrated that he is ready for the job! Shametra Rozzel L.Ac. was our speaker. Ms. Rozzel has an acupuncture practice in Twinburg. She held our attention as she explored the 3400 year history of this ancient Chinese Art. She showed pictures of early tools contrasted with the modern, disposable very thin needles now in use, She holds an undergraduate degree from Kent State and a Master of Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine from the New York College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. She studied for four years to obtain her Masters. She has also passed the certification exam and procedures by the professional organization that certifies acupuncturists. Acupuncture is covered by Medicare and private health insurance for certain treatments and diagnosis. It is used for the management of pain, reduction of stress, and to improve overall health.
