This Wednesday, August 7th, we will be celebrating our 2024-2025 year of The Magic of Rotary. Thank you to David Basil for engaging our speaker for Rotary Month.
Our own John Adams will interview three very active Rotarians, David Basil (a current member of the Board of Directors and serves as our Speakers Chair and has been a member since 2009), Ed Sogan (a current member of the Boaard of Directors and chair of the Santa and Mrs. Claus event and member since 2005) and Ron Strobl (the 2024 Rotarian of the Year for his many years of service on the Board of Directors and as our Sargeant-at-Arms and has been a member since 1998).
Past Meeting
Rotarian Jim Ahern interviewed Wilhelmina (Mickey) Jones, mother of PDG David Jones. Ms. Jones is a resident of Hudson Meadows and a survivor of Nazi imprisonment of her family during the later stages of WWII in Amsterdam. Born in 1937, she was 3 when the Nazi's invaded her home country. Her mother was active with the Dutch resistance and was the leader of a cell charged with destruction of bridges and railroads. Her mother also was an owner of a large 5 story home in which she was required to house a young German officer. The German officer occupied the first floor but, unknown to him, there were 19 Jews hidden on the floors above. Ms. Jones shared stories of the struggles to feed and house that many individuals. Unfortunately, her mother's role was discovered and she and her children were imprisoned and tortured. Her daughters were forced to witness the torture of their mother and suffered separation and torture and rape as well. In 1958, she met her husband in Amsterdam and soon married and started a family. Her husband was a career member of the Air Force retiring after 30 years. The memories of those early years still haunt Ms. Jones and she had a powerful message to impart on the horror of war and its effects on defenseless children. This session will be available on our YouTube Channel in the future. It was one of the most powerful and impactful meetings we have experienced. PDG David Jones and his wife Georgene were present to answer questions and share their experiences.
